Fill your tank Fridays – Rest

Sometimes the best way to fill up that tank is to rest, sleep, siesta, nap. Without rest, my brain does not work so well, my emotions feel out of control, my decision making is not its best. There are definitely times in life when pushing through, and working until you drop gets the job done – and there are times when all that pushing comes to naught because we are just too damned tired. When I have rested, I am more able to go forward, be creative, make decisions that serve me, and have good relationships with others.  Without rest, grouchy Monica comes out and she really doesn’t help me with anything – and no good comes of that!

Rest is one of the easiest fill-up-your-tank exercises, and one we forget about the most.  It’s easy, it’s free, all you need is a couch, bed, grass in the backyard, and you are golden.  Lie back, close your eyes, and let it happen.  If your mind starts racing, take a breath, thank your mind for all of its thoughts (or write some down if that helps), and let them pass.  Don’t worry, more will come up, simply say “look another thought” and put it down (sometimes I visualize myself actually catching each thought, looking at it, and then putting it down on the ground).

You can do it for 15 minutes, an hour, or even a day (sometimes I need a rest day!).  Even though it seems like the easiest thing in the world, it can be challenging for some of us to stop all the busy-ness and give ourselves permission.  Permission granted!!

For those of you who need a little help stopping and resting, here is a short meditation by Sogyal Rinpoche called “Rest in Natural Great Peace” to get you going.

Here is how I will be doing some resting this weekend, learning from my pup!!

  1. Monica, This is just what I needed! I came home from San Fran and 3 weeks later found out I have mono! I am at home now on a leave and all I can do is rest and try to calm my mind. Thank you for sharing this great meditation!
