My ritual of tea, lighting a candle, and pulling a card

My ritual of tea, lighting a candle, and pulling a card

Often, before I begin my day, there are a million thoughts swirling around in my head – emails that need answering; errands to run; calls to make; tasks to complete.  Sometimes its a real challenge working for myself and having to structure the day and my to-do list.  So I perform a little ritual, I pour myself a cup of tea, light a candle, and pull an oracle card for the day (these are The Enchanted Map Oracles Cards that I’ve written about here).  In doing this, I am stopping the busy-ness of the day (sometimes before it even starts), taking some deep breaths, and tapping into my center, my inner guidance.

I’ve been thinking about rituals lately because I am in the middle of a 108 day program my good friend Vanessa Sage has created called “Enchant Your Everyday” in which she has asked us to develop and play with practices to enchant (or make sacred) every single day.  I chose the above ritual as a way to do this for myself.  As I began incorporating it into my day (and following what others in the group were also doing), I began noticing other moments of reverence, wonder, and delight.  Here are some examples:

Instead of kicking him off in irritation, I noticed how darn cute my dog is when he wants to hang out on my yoga mat with me:

I got completely fascinated with a hairy spider hanging out under the arm rest of my garden adirondack chair – I thought I was a tarantula (it’s not, it’s a common jumping spider).

I opened my eyes and noticed a neighbor’s amazing dahlias.

Even though my little ritual is only about 10 minutes long, it has helped me slow down enough to connect more fully with the world around me – and it feels really good!

What rituals connect you more fully with yourself and the present moment?  I’d love to hear about them, leave a comment!

  1. I could definitely use a calm, centering ritual for my day. Yours reminded me of a book I read long ago and really loved – “My Grandfather’s Blessings” by Rachel Naomi Remen. It was recommended to me by a therapist friend and the author also loves ritual. I think you would enjoy her book and it is separated into bite-sized snippets so if you are busy – you just read a little!
Also – DOGS totally love yoga! My sister’s dog has to be on one of our yoga mats when they are out. He starts out very active, but ends up calm and restful. My dog, on the other hand” meditates on the couch during yoga!
Looking forward to the next post and I’ll keep you posted if I find a ritual that fits me. 🙂
